As a volunteer association PTA understands the importance of honoring our students, parents, leaders, PTA units, and other individuals. There are several
awards that you can apply for each providing an opportunity to honor someone
special or your PTA’s amazing efforts throughout the year.

How can our PTA become an award winning PTA?

Nevada PTA and National PTA recognize PTA’s for Outstanding achievement. Awards include:

RECOGNITION AWARDS

The Nevada PTA Recognition Awards program is designed to recognize individuals who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to local PTA’s, in keeping with the Purposes and Mission of PTA.  Awards are presented at the Nevada PTA State Convention.

Ann T. Lynch Outstanding PTA Parent Award

This award is given to a parent,grandparent, guardian, or other volunteer at the school for outstanding service to the school and to the PTA. The award is named after Ann T. Lynch who served as Nevada PTA President and National PTA President. Ann is known for her exemplary service in these roles and is a true model of a parent who has made a huge difference in many children’s lives.

Youth Participation Award

This award is given to a student who is active not only at school but also in the community, provides a good  of citizenship for other students at the school, and shows strong commitment to home and family.  Your entry may include letters from other community organizations with which the student is involved.  It should include a list of programs and projects the students participated in or have led.

Teacher of the Year Award

This award is given to a teacher, who promotes parent involvement in the classroom and the school, as outlined in the National Standards for Parent Involvement.

Lynel Cunningham Site Administrator Award

This award honors Lynel Cunningham, a retired Washoe County principal and former member of the Nevada PTA Board of Managers. Lynel was a strong supporter of parent and family involvement and continuously practiced these standards within the school. The award is given to an administrator who promotes parent involvement in the school, as outlined in the National Standards for Parent Involvement.

Bob Huwe  Involvement Award

In honor of Bob Huwe, a retired elementary principal, long-time member of the Nevada PTA Board of Managers, and a true advocate for community involvement, this award is given to a PTA and to a community organization, business, or individual that have collaborated to strengthen schools, families and student learning. Your award entry may include pictures and other supporting materials.

Dixie Worden Humanitarian Award

This award, honoring a retired school nurse in Clark County and a former member of the Nevada PTA Board of Managers, is given to a PTA that sponsors an outstanding activity or program that promotes the health and/or welfare of children.  Some suggested activities include:  coat drive, holiday food drive, immunization
clinic, monthly assemblies to instruct children on subjects relating to health
and safety, drug and alcohol awareness programs, nutrition programs, mental
health programs on such issues as suicide prevention and stress reduction. 

President’s Special Award

This award is given at the discretion of the Nevada PTA president to one or more PTA’s or individuals for sponsoring an outstanding program that may not have fit into another award category.  Choose a project that you believe helped you accomplish a specific goal at your school and may be of interest to other schools.

Spotlight Award

This award is given to a PTA that produced an outstanding newsletter.
To apply for this award, simply send three (3) samples of your PTA’s
newsletter to Nevada PTA.  Entries will be judged on content, commercialism, creativity, proper use of PTA logo and appearance.  Your newsletter does not
have to be done by a professional, but it does need to be informative and easy
to read.  It should include a calendar and graphics or pictures.

Hank Etchemendy Advocacy Award

Hank Etchemendy served for many years as a legislative consultant to Nevada PTA, assisting with preparation of resolutions and testimony to help bring about legislation that improved the Lives and education of Nevada’s children. In honor of his memory, this award is given to a local PTA, volunteer, legislator, or other public official who has championed a cause that benefits children in the local area or throughout the state of Nevada.Nominees should be persons who or PTAs that: Take up a cause for the benefit of children and fight for that cause before public or school officials; Support, recommend and encourage public officials and legislators to pass laws that will benefit children; Organize a group of PTA individuals into advocates on behalf of children (such as set up a phone/e-mail tree for the legislature, set up a candidates night, sponsor an Advocate Training Program, sponsor a school accountability meeting, etc.); Provide parents with current information regarding school policies, performance data, etc. (publish the school’s process for resolving parent concerns, develop a Student Advocacy Handbook, develop a parent/family involvement policy, etc.); or Promote parent participation on school, school district, state, and/or national committees and issues.

MEMBERSHIP AWARDS APPLICATION

The Nevada PTA Membership Awards program is designed to recognize local PTA’s who have demonstrated a commitment to increasing and maintaining membership. Awards are presented at the Nevada PTA State Convention. 

100% Membership Award

A certificate is given to every local PTA that has membership equal to the number of children enrolled.  Enrollment figures are taken from data reported by the school districts to the Nevada Department of Education on the September “count day”.   Membership figures are taken from dues and membership rosters received in the Nevada PTA office by March 31.

75% Membership Award

A certificate is given to every local PTA that has membership equal to 75% of the number of children enrolled.  Numbers are determined the same manner as for the 100% awards.

 

100% Staff Membership Award

To qualify for this award, count the certified and support staff personnel who work full-time at your school and make sure you remit memberships equal to the number of staff members you counted.  On your final membership report, enter the figures in the designated area.  Every that qualifies will receive a certificate.

Membership Increase Award

To qualify for this award and receive a certificate, you simply need to remit more memberships than you did last year.

Nick Poulakidas Membership Promotion Award

Nick Poulakidas was a teacher and administrator in Washoe County.  In honor of his memory, this award recognizes PTAs that have an outstanding membership campaign, not only to increase membership, but to promote PTA and its purposes throughout the school and the community. Take pictures of events anddisplays that are part of your membership campaign.  Keep a copy of each flier you send to parents and teachers.  Fill out the form at the end of this packet.  Place your pictures, fliers, and the form in a binder or mount them on a “science project board.”  You may bring your presentation directly to the convention or send/bring it to the Nevada PTA office by March 31.  These entries will be displayed and voted on by the delegates at the 2012 state convention in Las Vegas, NV.

Awards will be as follows:  1st place, $100; 2nd place, $75; 3rd place, $50; Honorable Mention, $25. 

NATIONAL PTA AWARD NATIONAL PTA PHOEBE APPERSON-HEARST EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP AWARD

This national award is given to local PTAs whose collaborative efforts with parents, families, educators, and community members parent/family involvement in ongoing programs that encourage student success.  You will need to supply the following information:
What community organization collaborated with your PTA
What parent involvement standards your program meets
How your program fulfills the purposes and/or mission of PTA
Why you chose this program.
How you have and will continue to keep this program going.
How you evaluated your program and will continue to do so.
What you will do next.
How you will use the cash award if you win.
Why you should receive the award.
